DIY Sleeveless Duster with a Lining and Fabric Review

Hello Everyone! Today’s post is all about my yellow sleeveless duster with an Ankara print lining. In order to create this duster I used my favor pattern: New Look 6514. I have a tutorial on how to make this duster with sleeves here. In order to make the sleeveless version with a lining, you can follow the same steps in the video and use the following modifications and steps:

  • Omit sleeves
  • Omit facing (only if adding a lining)
  • Lined the back pattern pieces with same fabric, used contrasting fabric for front pieces.
  • Before attaching the lining, hem (pressing only, not stitching yet) the arm holes and bottom edge 5/8 inch. Do this for both the main fabric and lining.
  • Attach the lining to main fabric with right sides together. Pin along the center front and neck area. Start at the bottom edge of one of the center front edges, pivot when you get to the neck, sew the neck and then the other center front side. Understitch the center front pieces and neck area. I demonstrate how to understitch in the video.
  •   Turn the duster right side out, make sure the hemmed edges are on the inside now. Sew arm holes together, sew bottom edge together.

Fabric Review

When creating the plans to make this duster, I knew I wanted to use yellow fabric. I wanted to use 100% linen fabric, however I needed about 5 yards of fabric to create the duster main pieces and back lining pieces. 5 yards of 100% linen was out of my budget so I started shopping around for alternatives. Through my search I found this Kaufman Essex Linen Blend fabric in the color sunshine. I did not find the fabric to be itchy, I read many reviews about the fabric and that was a trending complaint. This could be because the fabric barely touches my skin because my garment is sleeveless.

What I liked about the fabric

The fabric was very easy to work with, I experienced no challenges with cutting or sewing the fabric. I also liked the color, the picture online is very much reflective of what I received in person. In addition, I liked the weight of the fabric.

What I did not liked about the fabric

I do not like how easily this fabric wrinkles.

Thank you Ingrid. Details about adding the lining are above (refer to the last three bullet points). You should definitely make one. Let me know if you have any clarifying questions.

    Hey Montoya,

I live all of your tutorials and have managed to complete a few garments, so thank for your help along the way. So you have any tutorials for making your own patterns for trousers or a peplem top. I’d really appreciate your help and advice. Thanks Tanya x
