DIY Duster Sewing New Look 6305 Ankara African Print Yellow Orange

Sew the Look

Fabric: Ankara (100% cotton) from Ankara and Lace

Pattern: New Look 6305, View E

Sizing: I cut the size 12, I sized down from the recommended size. My bust measurement is 37, I looked at the finished garment measurements to make my decision. The finished garment bust measurement for the size 12 is 39.5 inches, giving me 2.5 inches of ease. I prefer to wear my duster open/ slightly open with a sash, so I knew I wouldn’t need much ease.

Modifications:

  • Omitted bust darts
  • Added Pockets (pocket pattern here)
  • Added sash ( 98 x 2.5 in.) I combined 3 pieces of scrap fabric to achieve the length
  • No contrasting band for the sleeve cuff, I pinned the cuff pattern piece to the sleeve pattern. I folded the down the seam allowance on both pieces before pinning them together.

Styling: I styled the duster with a mesh mock neck body suit and leggings from Forever 21 and ankle booties from JustFab.

    Oh my, WOW!
    Love, love how you placed your pattern pieces so you got the maximum effect of the elongated blue diamonds at the shoulders and sleeves.
