Happy Thursday Everyone! Todays post is all about my suede jacket. This was my first time making a garment using suede fabric. Ankara and crepe are my usual go to fabrics because I’m comfortable working with them, lately I’ve been having the desire to step outside of my comfort zone. This definitely helped me with that.
Before purchasing any fabric or materials I did some research on sewing with suede fabric and best practices. Below you will find the top three tips I learned. Next I had to decide on the silhouette of my garment so I went to Pinterest for some inspiration and I fell in love with all of the suede coats with waterfall draping. After that, I went to my Sewing Patterns board on Pinterest to see if I had saved any patterns with a similar silhouette and sure enough I did, Burda 7184.
After my research was done and my supply list was ready I set out to JOANN’s to decide which color suede I should choose and to pick up the other items on my list. I had some challenges deciding which color to choose because there was so many. I was torn between Cabernet, Deep Lichen Green, and Mineral Yellow. After holding all of the fabric up to myself and checking myself out in the mirror I decided to go with Deep Lichen Green because it complemented my skin tone the best and I could visualize my styling with all black.

Top Tips I Learned
- Pay attention to the nap of the fabric (very important when cutting out your pattern pieces)
- Use clips not sewing pins (in quilting section at JOANN’s)
- Try different needles and tension settings on fabric scraps before sewing your garment
