Ankara Fabric Haul

Hello Everyone! Happy Tuesday! Today I come to you with a fabric haul. I haven’t bought fabric in a while, I’ve been trying to stick to using up the fabric in my stash. With the school year starting August 1st, I decided that I’d like to make some new skirts with matching Imani necklaces for work. I plan to make maxi skirts that have a flat front and elastic waist back, a sash and of course pockets. I’m also considering adding belt loops to some of the skirts. As soon as I get my technique together I’ll have a tutorial for you all.

In the video below I show you the 10 different Ankara fabrics that I recently purchased from PFAB Designs. The shop was having a site wide sale of 15% during fourth of July weekend so I had fill up my cart with some goodies. Also below, you’ll find links to the fabric mentioned in the video.

**Be sure to measure all of your fabric when ordering online, one of mine was about 7 inches short.

You have such a great eye when it comes to pattern selection, which I think is the hardest thing about choosing Ankara fabric. In Trinidad & Tobago we celebrate Emancipation day on August 1st where the entire country wears Afrocentric clothing even the banks! We generally wear a lot of Ankara year – round so I’m always on the lookout for fabric & different ways to style it. Your choices are beautiful!

Thank you for the compliments!!! Wow even the banks, that’s nice. I’m working on making my Ankara collection to be year around as well.

Hi. I really enjoy your tutorials. You are very thorough in your explanations. I just purchased. Used sewing machine and have no clue what to do. However, I’m certain that by watching your videos i will learn quickly. My question is, do you purchase all of your Ankara fabrics from Etsy?

Hi! Thank you for the compliments. Congrats on your purchasing your machine. As soon as you get the hang of threading your particular machine, you should be good to go. I do purchase the majority of my fabric from Etsy. I have bought one bundle of fabric from this store: https://www.fabricsusainc.com, I really liked the quality.

Everything is absolutely gorgeous! I cannot wait to start buying. I am brand spanking new to the world of sewing and I am super excited! I came across your videos and I have loved each one. I like how detailed you are in your explanations and you make it easy to follow. I have one question which will probably sound dumb but do you base how many yards of fabric you purchase on one piece you plan to make or do you always get extra just in case? Thank you for all you do!

Thank you!!! Welcome to the world of sewing!!!! That’s a really good question. Lately I have been purchasing fabric yardage by how much I need for a piece. There are those times when certain shops only sell fabric by 6 yard bundles so I end up buying the 6 yards even if I only need 4 yards.
