I’ve been dreaming of making a long bomber coat for years, but finding the perfect fabric was a challenge. I have a collection of beautiful fabrics, but none of them spoke to me for this design—until I discovered this stunning textile from Afrique Clothing Store. The moment I saw it, I knew it was the one! Next, I needed a pattern to serve as my starting point. If you’ve been following my sewing journey, you know I rarely sew a pattern as-is—I use them as templates to bring my vision to life. Know Me 2010 was the perfect choice, as View A provided the ideal length to build upon. Of course, I made a few modifications to achieve the exact look I envisioned. You’ll find a screenshot of my modifications below, along with a video where I explain the changes.
This coat also holds special significance as a celebration of Black History Month. February is an exciting time in the sewing community, with challenges like #BHMPatternDesigners25 by Black History Month Pattern Designers and #BSNBHM2025 by Black Sewing Network. These challenges honor the incredible contributions of Black designers. The ME2010 pattern is designed by Sins of Many, a talented and creative designer. If you’re looking for inspiration, I encourage you to check out #BHMPatternDesigners—Nateida of Sew Natural Dane has curated a fantastic list of Black designers, fabric shops, and even crochet designers. Whether you sew, knit, or craft, this is the perfect time to explore and support Black creatives.
Let me know what you think of my long bomber coat, and if you’re participating in the challenges this year!
