DIY Halter Top and Maxi Skirt

Sew the Look

Fabric: Ankara (100% cotton) I bough this fabric about 4 years ago from a fabric shop that is no longer on Etsy. I have yet to find more of this print during my hours of scrolling through fabric.

Pattern: The top is Simplicity 8330. This two piece started off as a dress, view C top and view A skirt. I made the dress about 4 years ago; I tried it on this past summer and could no longer zip it up. This fabric was way too gorgeous to go to waste so I decided to take the dress apart. I kept the top and used the skirt portion for the new waistband and pockets on the new skirt.

For the skirt I used my pattern from my Toya Skirt Tutorial. I had about 2.5 yards of fabric left over after creating the original dress.

Sizing: I originally cut the size 10, my bust measurement at the time was 35 inches, I looked at the finished garment measurements to make my decision. My size has changed since then so I modified the back pattern pieces so that I can still fit into the top (See modifications below).

Modifications:

  • I omitted the center back panels of the bodice and kept the side back panels
  • I shortened the side back panel. Starting at the armhole, I began to eliminate the upper half of the side back panel, see picture below.
  • I created ties for the back closure. Ties measurements: 3in x 13in (not including seam allowance)
