Fabric: Ankara (100% cotton) from Afrique Clothing Store, I used 6 yards (I have about 2 yards of the bottom boarder left over)
Pattern: To create the top part of the dress I used two patterns Burda 6968 and McCall’s 7943. I used the Burda pattern to alter the neckline of the McCall’s pattern. I recorded this explanation and it will be featured in my upcoming June Makes video.
The ruffle tier is self-drafted, you can watch the tutorial below.
Sizing: I cut the size M, for the McCall’s dress and the size 16 in the Burda pattern. My bust measurement is 37, I looked at the finished garment measurements on the pattern to make my decision.
Modifications:
- I used the bottom portion of the fabric to create my tier, as a result I had to cut the front in two pieces opposed to on the fold. I love how this turned out, if you look close you’ll see how this created a mirroring effect. I made sure to check my pattern piece placement so that the print lined up seamlessly.
- Sash, I didn’t use the one from the pattern. I used three scrap pieces of fabric, each piece measuring 31in. x 5 inches. I think I should do a tutorial on how I create my sashed because I wear them with most of my garments.
Simply beautiful! I love your makes!

Thank you so much April! I am thinking about starting virtual sewing classes, first I need to explore how to set everything up and then I’ll send out a questionnaire if my set up is successful.
