Hello Everyone! Happy Tuesday! Today’s post is all about my Ankara duster with contrasting black bands and front pockets. I used New Look 6305 as a base to create my duster, with a few modifications I was able carry out my vision. This project definitely helped me bring back my SewJo!
My favorite part of this duster is the pockets. The pattern does not include pockets so I had to brainstorm and design my own. When cutting out the pocket I was very strategic, I made sure that the pocket fabric matched the duster front fabric so that they would blend seamlessly. This step did take extra time, however adding this extra touch was so creatively satisfying. This project really helped to bring me back to enjoying the beauty of the sewing process.
I have some great projects on my to do list that I am excited to create. I look forward to sewing through my fabric and pattern stash this fall/winter season!!! Stay tuned.
Materials
- Pattern: New Look 6305- View E, I cut the size 10. (My measurements- B:35 in., W:28 in., H:41 in.)
- Fabric: I used Ankara for the main fabric (100% cotton) and shirting fabric (100% cotton) for the black contrasting bands.
Modifications
- Eliminated the darts, I did not want to disturb the flow of the print.
- Added front pockets, 8.5 inches by 8.5 inches. I attached them within the side seam about 3 inches below the waist.
- Added a contrasting band to the hem.
- I had to shorten the pattern by 9 inches and cut it out on the crossgrain due to my fabric being a directional print.
- Created sash 80 in. by 5 in.
Beautiful! Great job matching the pockets.

My sewing room is under construction at the moment so I haven’t had time to film.
You absolutely killed it! It looks amazing! Did you use black thread on the pocket contrast?
Author
Thank you Lebo!!! Yes, I stitched the top of the pocket down first using black thread and then I swapped out the thread to green.
Love it! Hopefully you do a tutorial or Sew-along for this one…I would love to add it to my closet!

Beautiful coat. Could you do a video on how you pattern matched the pockets, please?
