DIY Midi Front Slit Skirt Simplicity 9238 Ankara African Print

Sew the Look

Fabric: For the skirt and necklace I used Ankara (100% cotton) from Aaron International. I made the top with ponte knit in my stash, I purchased the fabric from my local fabric store.

Patterns/Tutorials: For the skirt I used Simplicity 9238, View B. To create the top I used my tube top pattern from my Tube Dress Tutorial on YouTube. I made my necklace using my Imani Necklace Tutorial.

Sizing: For the skirt I cut the size 16, my hip measurement is 41 inches. I looked at the finished garment measurements to make my decision. The finished garment hip measurement for the size 16 is 45.5 inches, giving me 4.5 inches of ease. My waist and hip measurements tend to not fall in the same size range so I measured the waist before cutting out my fabric. After measuring I graded down the waist to fit my measurements (see modifications below).

Modifications:

  • Graded waist: I graded the waist to be 29 inches. My waist is 28 inches plus 1 inch of ease yielded 29 inches. To achieve this I took 5/8 inch off the front waistband pattern and 1/2 inch off the back waistband pattern.
  • Omitted the sheer contrast underskirt, pattern piece #2

Love what you are making for yourself. Your photos are so cheerful and happy. Love this skirt idea, do you think it could be made without such a huge slash?

Thank you so much Diana!!! Yes, you can make view C of the pattern so that your leg won’t be exposed.
