My favorite item to wear and make is hands down a maxi skirt! This maxi skirt is the perfect project for beginners. These skirts are easy to make and they are extremely comfortable to wear. When I first began sewing I made multiple maxi skirts, but I did not add pockets and I now regret having done that. I am in love with pockets, they are a must for every project that I construct. I used a rayon fabric to create this look and I also use wax prints as well when making this maxi. I purchased this fabric from lowpricefabric.com, but it has since then sold out. Similar fabric can be found here and here. Make this look with me using the tutorial below.

I am making this skirt for a friend whose hips measure 55. I am using a wax print that is only 45 wide. Do you think that’s enough ease/give or should I find a wider fabric?

Hi Holly. You can use 45 inch wide fabric for your friend. You should cut out the skirt panels so that the top and bottom edges of the skirt are parallel to the selvage edges. However, when you cut out your skirt panels this way you sacrifice in length. I’m not sure how long you need the skirt to be, but since your fabric is 45 inches after accounting for the waistband and hem your length will be about 42 inches. I hope this helps.

Hi Tivona! Yes, you can. I’ve used cotton fabric for the majority of the skirts that I have in this style.
