Sew the Look

Fabric: Ankara (100% cotton) from Avosato. I used 4 yards for the skirt and 5/8 yard for the bodice.

Patterns: For the skirt I used Gertie’s Butterick 6453 and for the bodice I used Gertie’s Lamour Dress pattern. This was my first time creating a fitted bodice with boning. I learned so many new skills following Gertie’s sew along on her YouTube channel: how to work with spiral steel boning, princess seam construction, lap zipper and so much more. Now I’m ready to try more fitted bodice patterns and elevate my tailoring skills.

Sizing: I used the size 14 to create my skirt. I used the maximum size of the pattern because I wanted my skirt to have a lot of volume. For the bodice I cut the size 8 (B/C cup). My bust measurement is 37 in., I looked at the finished garment measurements and Gertie’s recommendations in the tutorial to make my decision. I created two muslins to get my desired fit. After sewing the final bodice I had some excess fabric in the center front. I plan to make this topic again and will work on creating an even better fit.

Modifications:

  • Skirt~ I used the skirt portion of B6453 and lengthened to my desired skirt length (42.5 in.). I also added extra length to create a two inch hem. The waistband is a self drafted flat front elastic back design.
  • Bodice~ For the bodice I used the bodice portion of the Lamour Dress pattern and I used a 7 inch separating zipper from Joann’s.

    Hello!

I am at the very beginning stages of sewing so I do not know how and where to start making such a beautiful garment. Do you sell these custom made dresses? Or do you just provide the tutorials of how to make them?? I love all your garments, but this dress, oh my! I love it!! Do you make them with short sleeves for a more modest apparel? If so, can you provide the information I need to get my hands on one of these.

    Thank you,

    Jessica

Hi Jessica! Thank you for the love. I don’t sell my garments, I just provide tutorials and resources for how I make my items. The Lamour dress pattern that I used does offer a shoulder strap design. You can reach out to my sewing friend Portia to see if she can create this design for you https://posh-by-portia.myshopify.com.

Thank you Tarine!!! I purchased the fabric from a shop called Avosato. Click on the name in the fabric section and you’ll see the link to their shop.

This is stunning! Wonderful use of a border fabric too! Do you have a big slip to make it stand out, or is the fabric drape? Thanks.

Thank you Heather. No slip, I created a 2 inch hem to help it stand out and I used 4 yards of fabric, lots of gathering lol
